第I卷
A If watching kids isn’t quite the part-time job you’d want to keep yourself busy with during the summer holidays, then here are some of the coolest jobs for teens. Camp Counselor (辅导员) Though it’s kind of a babysitting job, it’s much more fun as it exposes you to many skills such as team working and many other activities. Another advantage of this kind of job is that you are more likely to make new friends as you will be working with a number of people. Life Guard This will not be a job for anyone as it is quite demanding when you’re really needed. Under calm conditions, the job involves sitting by the poolside as you watch over swimmers and helping them in case of emergencies. For life guard tasks, special training and certifications are required. Dog Walker For animal lovers, you have not been left out. This job involves taking care of dogs and walking them. Fun as it is, dog walking can be a boring exercise especially if you have more than one dog to walk. As for this job, you need to advertise yourself in your neighborhood by using flyers or approaching dog owners to ask if they need your services. Retail & Food Service
1

If you are 14 and above then you may consider getting a “real” job as a store or restaurant attendant this summer. Creating a resume (简历) for yourself with all the

that you’d like your employer to know about is important.

B Two summers ago I was about to turn fifty and wanted to do something I’d never

done before. My daughter Bailey thought skydiving (跳伞) would be perfect for me. I

can promise you that of all the things I was thinking of doing, jumping out of an

airplane never came close to making the list. As I age, I seem to have developed a

growing fear of heights.

After several requests from my daughter, I finally said yes and she looked almost

shocked. We had a 3-hour drive to the jump site. We drove through some beautiful

countrysides, and then we arrived at a small cemetery (基地) . I asked if so many

people died jumping out of airplanes in this area that they needed to keep building

more cemeteries to bury all the bodies!

2

As we squeezed into the little plane, I was extremely nervous. The short ride to

altitude was cruel for me. As Bailey stepped to the door, she looked back at me and

said “Dad, I’m sure you can do it!” I said yes as she rolled out. I immediately looked

out of the window, saying “RONNIEI AM NOT FEELING GOOD” , and jumped out.

The next five minutes were some of the most exciting of my life. It was so

beautiful and peaceful—except for the parts where I was screaming. I prayed to God

for the parachute(降落伞)to open, but mostly I told Him how thankful I was for my

life and being with me through good and bad.

C Britain’s workforce face the threat of unemployment as robots take over human

3

jobs, chief economist Mr. Haldane from the Bank of England has warned, claiming the

UK must re-skill its workforce to avoid growing numbers of “technologically

unemployed” people.

The “fourth industrial revolution”, driven by artificial intelligence, could change the economy potentially on a greater scale(规模)than ever before, he told BBC Radio

4’s Today Programme.

People with manual(手工的)jobs, such as in transportation, manufacturing and

storage, are most at risk of losing work as a result of artificial intelligence, who will be

able to undertake tasks faster and more efficiently than humans, while customer-facing

roles, focused on skills of human interaction and negotiation, could increase as a result

of technology.

Mr. Haldane added we must learn the “lessons of history” by re-training the

workforce to take up new jobs created by technology.

He linked the current changes being driven by advances in robotics with previous

periods of rapid technological change in the 19th and 20th centuries. “Each of those

industrial revolutions had a far-reaching effect on the job market, on the lives and

livelihoods of society, heightening social and financial tensions, and led to a rise in

inequality. This is the dark side of technological revolutions.” It’s remarkable that his

warning follows data published last week showing the UK’s jobless rate fell to the

lowest level since 1975 in June.

Tabitha Goldstaub, chair of the UK government’s AI Council, warned that people

would need critical support to prepare for changes that could see up to 50% of jobs

currently done replaced by new technologies.

However, not everyone agrees that AI will hollow out the need for the workforce.

In May, 71% of UK chief executives told KPMG that AI will create more jobs than it

destroys in the short run.

28. What’s the warning of Mr. Haldane?

A. Robots will take human’s jobs.

B. Robots can socialize with man.

4

C. AI will threaten human existence.

D. Technical changes cause

disasters.

29. What’s the unfavorable side of technological revolutions?

A. A drop in the quality of products.

B. A stop in economic

development.

C. A rise in social inequality and stress.

D. A fall in the living standard of

society.

30. Which of the following best explains “hollow out” underlined in Paragraph 8?

A. Strengthen.

B. Reduce.

C. Oppose.

D.

Introduce.

31. What can be a suitable title for the passage?

A. AI Threatens the Existence of the Workforce.

B. New Jobs Come with AI for the Workforce.

C. The Fourth Industrial Revolution Hurts People.

D. Robots will Take the Jobs of British Workforce. D

Not only does the use of plastic water bottles hurt your wallet, it also increases

pollution and wastes energy and water. Only 23 % of all plastic in America ends up in

a recycling bin, meaning over $ 1 billion worth of plastic is treated as rubbish a year.

Recently, Skipping Rocks Lab has invented a kind of water bottle called Ooho.

It is a convenient, clear water bottle that can either be drunken or eaten. To drink it,

you can either peel off the membrane(薄膜)or tear a hole in the membrane with your

teeth to pour the water into your mouth. To eat it, you simply put the whole bottle in

your mouth.

One problem the scientists have run into is how to ship large amounts of Ooho

bubbles(水泡)without arriving with a very wet truck. However, they have attempted to

package units of individual bubbles together inside a larger and thicker membrane. It is

targeting large outdoor events, such as marathons, music festivals, and sporting

5

events, where tons of plastic bottles are used, and frequently left behind as litter. And

too much plastic is sure to do harm to the environment, which could account for their

purpose of such a new invention.

The team has been working for the past two years to develop the technology and

materials needed to produce Ooho;they have recently applied a patent(专利)for their

new advancements. The price for an individual bubble or a unit of bubbles has not

been set yet, but they cost about two cents to create a unit, which is cheaper than

plastic bottles. It has appeared at events in London, San Francisco, at conferences,

festivals,and so on.

Ooho is catching many people’s attention and has raised over $ 1 million and

gained 1000 investors in only three days. It is mostly being sold at events at the

moment to keep the consumer’s interest while the production machine is getting up

and running. It is quickly making a rise,so keep an eye out this year for these bottles of

the future.

32. How is most plastic dealt with in America?

A. It’s sold.

B. It’s recycled.

C. It’s buried.

D. It’s wasted.

33. Why did the team invent Ooho?

A. To make a profit for a company.

B. To protect the environtnent.

C. To make people eat as they drink.

D. To reduce the cost of plastic

bottle.

34. What can we infer about Ooho from the text?

A. It is easy and safe to ship it in large amounts.

B. It has become popular since it began to be sold.

C. It might be sold at a lower price than plastic bottles.

D. It cost the team a lot of money to develop the technology.

35. What does the author really want to say in the last paragraph?

A. Ooho is to be a success in the future.

B. Ooho is being supported by smart people.

6

C. Ooho is taking the place of plastic bottles now. D. Ooho is being produced to attract more investors.
Why I Love Cycling One of the first things I did when I moved to a new city was hire a bike. Why?___36___ You travel much faster than on foot and you notice so much more of your surroundings than when in a bus or a car. It’s more appealing to wander down small streets if they seem interesting, as you can quickly get back to the main road. Besides, I soon discovered plenty more benefits to cycling. A bike means that fewer places, especially in a small city like the one where I live now, feel far away. For example, cycling to work takes me half the time that it would to walk. ___37___ Of course, there are obvious health benefits of cycling—a bit of extra movement as part of your daily routine can help you keep fit and healthy. Cycling on my way to work also makes me feel more energetic in the mornings. ___38___ While cars pollute the environment, bikes are carbon-neutral. Furthermore, thanks to being petrol-free, bikes are cheaper to run, buy and fix than cars. Even if you don’t own a car, a bike can pay for itself when compared to the price of bus tickets. ___39___ Always wear a helmet, pay attention to other traffic and don’t forget your lights at night. Make sure you know the road rules, especially in a new place. Some cities are more cycle-friendly than others. ___40___ Luckily, where I live now is pretty easy to ride a bike around, thanks to having lots of cycle lanes and not too many hills! A. However, be careful when cycling. B. I have to learn to ride safely on the right of the road. C. Importantly, cycling also helps to reduce your carbon footprint. D. And sometimes city roads are difficult or unpleasant for cyclists.
7

E. Riding a bike also means you’re not restricted by bus timetables. F. Seeing a city by bike is ideal for settling in and learning your way around. G. Cycling to work excellently fits for someone who wants to save their pocket money.

13

Only 23 % of all plastic in America ends up in a recycling bin, meaning over $ 1 billion worth of plastic is treated as rubbish a year. 根据第一段的 it also increases pollution and wastes energy and water. And too much plastic is sure to do harm to the environment, which could account for their purpose of such a new invention. The price for an individual bubble or a unit of bubbles has not been set yet, but they cost about two cents to create a unit, which is cheaper than plastic bottles It is quickly making a rise, so keep an eye out this year for these bottles of the future.

E. Riding a bike also means you’re not restricted by bus timetables.
